When you think of a state athlete, St. Charles West has an honorable past and a consistent present, including past state champions like 1999’s Jake Newsham (Wrestling), or 2020’s Lily Jackson (Cross Country).  However, looking into the future, a sport that deserves more recognition and has phenomenal athletes is the girl’s swim team at St. Charles West.

In fact, just yesterday, junior Lorelei Crowley qualified for the state meet with a time of 5:15 on her 500 free (the state qualifying time is 5:16).  Lorelei has had an honorable past with her swim career at West, including a GAC appearance her freshman year and assorted accomplishments her sophomore year.  Over the course of her three years, Lorelei has demonstrated time and time again that she has the potential to be a state champion.

“I honestly didn’t think I’d get it”, said Crowley, “But then I stop and everyone was screaming at me that I got it (state qualification time)”.

I was very excited and it made me so happy that I got it again this year

This season, Lorelei has put in the work this year, and her work is really showing in a positive way.  Coaches Tim Brasher and Taryn Ballmann commented on how hard she has been working the past few years for this moment, and her tremendous amount of effort this season.  Members of her team also had comments on Lorelei’s achievements.

“Lorelei’s qualification shows us how far we’ve come and how great our team is going to be”, said junior Sylvia Carroll.

“It’s very exciting and I’m very proud of her. She’s been working so hard to qualify and she finally got it”, said freshman Mya Buehrle.

“It’s so exciting! I was counting with Stella and Jacqueline so I didn’t see her actually make it, but I saw everyone scream and I knew”, said sophomore Izabela Brasher.
