This year, the St. Charles West competition cheer team will be participating in the gameday competition for the first time ever.
During the gameday competition, teams compete a band chant, timeout cheer, and a fight song. Teams can choose to compete in only one of these events, only two, or all three. However, only those who compete in all three are able to become state champions. Each of the events is scored separately, cumulating into one average score for the competing team. “I’m excited to see how this new competition will grow our program,” Head Coach, Kirsten Beer, said.
With this being the first time SCW will attend the gameday competition, nerves are high. “I am feeling very nervous about this because we are going up against 16 teams,” junior Kaitlyn Muerer said. The SCW gameday team is made up of girls from the varsity cheer team and girls from the junior varsity team. This means that several of the girls have never competed before. Though nervous, the team has worked very hard to get ready. “We have been preparing by making sure we have plenty of practice and making sure everyone knows their motions. We do a lot of full outs and run throughs just to make sure everyone knows what they are doing,” Muerer said.
The team will show off their routine during halftime of the boys varsity basketball game on February 10. You can watch the team perform for the first time on February 14 and 15 at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. Good luck girls!
