Taylor Swift’s Midnights
For over a month Taylor Swift fans have been excited about her new album, titled Midnights. She announced the album at the 2022 VMAs after winning Video of the Year for All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version). Ever since fans have been picking apart her posts, trying to unravel her cryptic clues to what secret project she has been working on.
On September 21st, Swift released her first Midnights Mayhem with Me video, where she would release song titles most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. She did this until October 7th, when she released 3 song titles, including a song called Snow on the Beach ft. Lana del Ray. Next Swift released videos where she talked about what her songs were about and how she was inspired to write songs like Anti-Hero and Lavender Haze. Then she went on to post a video “planner style” with all of the upcoming events that have to do with Midnights. Starting on Thursday, she would make an announcement on Thursday night Prime football. Then at midnight her album would be released. She also wrote about a 3 a.m. “very special chaotic surprise”. She will also appear on 2 talk shows throughout the release week.
When the album initially came out on October 21st, many streaming services crashed with the amount of activity it was getting. When fans got to listen, they went wild. On Swift’s appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Fallon says that Swift has broken many records, including most streams in 1 day, on multiple platforms. He also mentions how she get a 5 star review from the Rolling Stones. She also reached most album sales for the year, after less than a week of release.
The album starts with the upbeat song called Lavender Haze. Lavender Haze is about the honeymoon phase and is a love song. The next track is Maroon, a poetic song about finding your soulmate. Track 3 is called Anti-Hero. Its about Swift’s own personal insecurities and struggles with constantly being in the public eye. She released the music video on October 21st, and fans loved the ghosts (represented people that have left her life) and her casting choices.
Track 4 features Lana del Ray for the song Snow on the Beach. It uses the analogy of how snow on the beach is so rare, but so beautiful to describe the idea of falling in love. The next track called You’re On Your Own, Kid, has resonated with fans, being about childhood struggle and the idea of having nobody that cares about you. Track 6 starts out with Swift’s distorted voice singing Midnight Rain. Fans love the idea of having a sunshine and midnight rain relationship. The 7th track on the album, entitled Question…?, gives us an image of how society conforms to other’s opinions so easily, especially when it comes to having an opinion on a person. Track 8 is called Vigilante and is about Swift’s thirst for revenge.
Bejeweled is the 9th track and is about Swift’s placement in society. Her music video includes a Cinderella plotline, Speak Now TV Easter eggs, and a stellar cast. On Track 9 (Labyrinth) she talks about the ups and downs of falling in love and how
she has finally found a trust in love. Karma talks about how much she loves karma and how she doesn’t have to worry about getting revenge, because karma will take care of it. Despite rumors of being the “lost album” between Red and Reputation, Karma is just a song about how much she loves the concept of karma. The song, Sweet Nothing is about how soft Swift is, and gives us a vulnerable insight on her life. The last song on the album is called Mastermind and is about how Swift manipulated people into liking her. In her song she says, “Nobody wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since,” which shows a lot of vulnerability and really designates with a lot of listeners.
Then on November 1st, Swift announced her “Eras” tour on Good Morning America. She will start in Arizona on March 18th, and end in California on August 5th. She has a lot of amazing opening acts, including the Hiam sisters, Gracie Abrams, and Phoebe Bridgers. Public sale opens on November 18th.
